Collagen is a naturally-occurring substance found in the human skin. Depressions in the skin like scars and wrinkles is actually the result of lack of collagen in the affected area. By injecting collagen into the skin, these wrinkles and scars can be filled or plumped up, restoring a smoother complexion.

Collagen is often used to treat wrinkle folds due to sagging of the underlying facial structures, especially the nasolabial folds, deep groves between the nose and the mouth. It can also be injected into the lips to correct thin lips and lips that have lost their plumpness due to ageing.

The collagen used in these procedures is derived from cows, referred to as bovine collagen.
