Birth Control Methods and Contraceptives

A review of the different birth control devices to help you figure the best options for your needs.

2. Diaphragms

Initially, consult your doctor or gynaecologist, who will teach you how to insert and remove the diaphragm. The dome-like rubber device fits across the woman's cervix to act as a barrier to sperm entering the womb. It is normally used with a spermicide at the same time.

3. Female Condoms

Female condoms are available over the counter. The plastic pouch is placed into the vagina prior to sexual intercourse and provides a barrier to the entrance of sperm into the womb.

4. Contraceptive Injections or Implants

You need to consult your doctor to use this form of contraception. The injections or implants contain synthetic hormones that are similar to those in the contraceptive pill. Injections are usually given 2-3 months and implants every 5 years or so. The implant is placed under the skin in a woman's arm.
