Menorrhagia: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Find out why heavy periods happen, how to cope and what you can do to reduce the flow.

What causes heavy menstruation?

The most common cause is the dysfunctional uterine bleeding which is simply heavy bleeding that cannot be explained. Menorrhagia can also be a result of hormonal imbalances, which most often occurs in adolescent girls who aren't yet ovulating regularly as well as in women approaching menopause. Other reasons for menorrhagia include:

  • Uterine fibroids (benign tumors of the uterus) which may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
  • Polyps or small, benign growths on the lining of the uterine wall.
  • Pelvic inflammatory diease (PID)
  • Dysfunction of the ovaries. Lack of ovulation (anovulation) may cause hormonal imbalance and result in menorrhagia.
  • Intrauterine device (IUD) use can cause excessive menstrual bleeding.
  • Liver, kidney or thyroid disease
  • Bleeding disorders or blood-clotting abnormalities
  • Cancer of the uterus, ovaries or cervix
