Menorrhagia: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Find out why heavy periods happen, how to cope and what you can do to reduce the flow.

Treatment for menorrhagia

Treatment really depends on several factors such as the patients's age, the cause of bleeding as well as tolerance for specific medications. One way to treat heavy periods includes using contraceptive pills to regulate periods as part of a hormonal treatment. Non-hormonal medicines include tranexamic acid which can help reduce blood loss.

If menorrhagia is accompanied by anemia, your doctor may also recommend that you take iron or folic acid supplements. Other more invasive treatments include:

  • Dilation and curettage (D and C). The cervix is opened and then the uterine lining is scraped and suctioned. This procedure helps reduce menstrual flow but may need to be performed again if menorrhagia recurs.

  • Endometrial ablative surgery uses ultrasonic energy to permanently destroy the uterine lining (endometrium). This procedure helps treat menorrhagia, but reduces your ability to become pregnant.

  • Endometrial resection where an electrosurgical wire loop is used to remove the lining of the uterus. Like ablation, this procedure also reduces your ability to become pregnant.

  • Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix that causes permanent sterility and cessation of menstrual periods.
