3. Consume food safely

Prevent food-borne illnesses via contamination by disease-causing microorganisms with these tips:

  • Before consuming food, remember to check their expiry dates. Throw away any food past their use-by date, even if they appear and smell unspoiled.
  • Common causes of food poisoning are often the result of poor personal hygiene, improper cooking, or unclean preparation area or utensils. Always wash your hands, food preparation surfaces and utensils thoroughly before and after handling raw foods to prevent recontamination of cooked foods.
  • Serve the food only when it will be consumed. Don't prepare hours beforehand -- leaving dishes out on the table gives bacteria time to multiply and contaminate the food. If there are leftovers, refrigerate immediately.
