Stress & Generalized Anxiety Disorder

When worries about money, family, love, health and work go out of control.

What Causes Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Some studies suggest that GAD may run in families, and may grow worse during stress. If you do not have good stress management skills, the chances are increased that you will have trouble with generalized anxiety disorder.

Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

People suffering from GAD become chronically preoccupied with issues such as health, finances, career or family, or they can also worry over more minor matters such as deadlines for appointments and whether or not their house is properly cleaned. Even though most of them realize that their anxiety is unrational, they are unable to shake off their concerns.

They tend to get irritated easily and are unable to concentrate on their work. Loss of sex drive and insomnia are common. Other physical symptoms such as trembling, heart palpitations, stomach aches, diarrhoea and nausea are often experienced.

GAD Complications

People with GAD may eventually develop other psychiatric disorders, such as clinical depression and panic disorder. And other potential complications such as substance abuse may become a problem when the person attempts to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol to alleviate his/her anxiety.
