Vaginal Yeast Infection

Learn more about candidiasis – the second most common cause of vaginal irritation.

Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infections

Yeast infections can be very uncomfortable, but are usually not serious. Symptoms include:
  • Abnormal white vaginal discharge that may have a "yeasty" smell and may look like cottage cheese.
  • Irritation and burning of the vaginal and/or vulva (skin surrounding your vagina).
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Redness, inflammation or swelling of the vulva.
  • Painful urination.
If you experience symptoms of a yeast infection (especially if it's the first time you have the symptoms), it is advisable to see your doctor to rule out other possible infections with similar symptoms, such as some STDs. Treating yourself for a yeast infection when you actually have another type of infection may make the problem much worse.

How are Yeast Infections Treated?

Yeast infections are usually treated with vaginal creams such as miconazole or clotrimazole (which are also available over the counter) or prescription antifungal medications. Yeast infection medicine also comes in oral preparations. To relieve itching, anti-itching creams can be applied on the vulva.
