Is It Safe To Run During Pregnancy?

I love to sweat it out by running but I just found out that I'm pregnant. Is it safe to continue running?


Official guidelines published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists state that it's safe to exercise moderately for 30 minutes three times a week if you do not have medical or pregnancy-related problems. And many women continue their running workouts at a less intense pace during pregnancy without adverse effects.

In fact, there are multiple benefits for keeping fit -- active pregnant women are less likely to suffer from the classic discomforts of pregnancy, such as constipation, heartburn, cramp and nausea.

However, note that exercise capabilities decline in pregnancy, due to the changes taking place in your body. Just cut back the amount and intensity of training you do, down to a level that feels right. You should never get to the point where you feel breathless and sweaty. It is important to listen to your body, and stop if you feel any unusual twinges. (And if that means no running at all, that's fine.)
