Taming Toddler Tantrums

How you can deal with your toddler's self-centered behavior and temper tantrums.

3. Keep your cool

During times when you feel like losing it, the key thing to remember is not to react emotionally to her screaming, so you don't reinforce her behavior. If you feel trapped and embarrassed when your child is throwing a fit in the supermarket, don't blow your top. She is already out of control and needs you to stay in control. Just calmly carry her to a private place, like your car, where she can blow off steam and where you can quietly settle her down.

4. Avoid tantrum triggers

Tiredness, frustration and hunger cause tantrums, so ward off these triggers with a routine that includes regular snacks and meals and at least one nap a day. Also, make a note of the situations that provoke tantrums - it'll certainly help to avoid them. For example, if you know your child usually gets upset at the checkout, keep your shopping trips short.
