All About Cellulite

Who gets it and why, plus ways to get rid of those lumpy bits.

What causes cellulite?

Although cellulite is primarily due to genetics, these other contributing factors are believed to play a part in cellulite formation:

  • Hormones. The hormone estrogen is believed to play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite, which explains why women are more predisposed to cellulite than men. Cellulite is most likely to develop when women are going through stages of hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause and birth control pill use.

  • Ageing. As you age, the surface of the skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity, making the dimpled appearance more pronounced through the skin.

  • Crash diets. Frequent yo-yo diets and fasting result in muscle loss and increased fat, contributing to an increased cellulite.

  • Poor nutrition. Poor nutrition habits such as excessive consumption of fat, salt, alcohol or too little fiber has been linked to an increase in cellulite.

  • Sedentary lifestyle. Lack of exercise and the inactivity contribute to the formation of cellulite. Regular exercises helpskeep cellulite in check by improving blood flow and burning off extra calories.
