All About Cellulite

Who gets it and why, plus ways to get rid of those lumpy bits.

Fight cellulite: Strength/ resistance training

According to fitness experts, the answer to reducing the unsightly appearance of cellulite is to tone up your muscles. To accomplish this, incorporate weight training into your exercise regime.

Strength training helps by increasing muscle tone and decreasing total body fat. Choose a workout program that builds muscle tone in the lower body, and specifically targets cellulite-prone areas like hips, thighs and buttocks. For example, squats and lunges.

Aerobic forms of exercise such as running and power walking target heart and stamina training. Although aerobics training doesn't increase muscle tone, they're beneficial for your overall fitness, so aim to incorporate 20 minutes of aerobic exercise two to three times a week.

Fight cellulite: Massage

Many women find that massaging helps with their cellulite problem. Massaging the skin is said to help reduce the amount of cellulite by improving blood flow and lymphatic circulation, and breaking down the lumpy areas of fat.

Rub in circular motions with a massage or cellulite cream in the affected areas such as the thighs and bum.

Fight cellulite: Self-tanner

The darker your skin, the less noticeable the cellulite, and self-tanning is one of the quickest ways to disguise lumpy areas. Follow these tried-and-true tips to achieve a healthy tan: Try a tinted version of the product, so you can see where you're applying it and prevent streaks of untanned skin. For the most realistic results, opt for fair to medium shades -- the darker the tan, the faker it tends to look.
