Q&A

Dark Eye Circles

Question:

What causes dark circles under the eyes? Is there any way to get rid of them? I have these dark shadows and I'm tired of having to hide them with a concealer everytime.

In most cases the dark eye circles are a result of aging, sundamage or inheritance. Dark shadows form when the fatty layer located just below the eye thins, producing a sunken appearance. Light reflects off these hollows creating the illusion of shadowy circles. The undereye area may also appear dark when bluish veins become visible underneath the skin due to the thinning of the fat pad.

Dark circles can also be due to eye bags. When lying down, gravity causes fluid to collect in your lower eyelids, which may create shadows below the eyes. Hormonal skin changes, allergies and chronic sun damage can also induce eye puffiness thus exaggerating dark circles.

DIY Fixes...
If you suffer from the occasional eye bags and dark circles due to poor sleep, at-home fixes can often do the trick:

Try this quick fix straight out of the kitchen. Place moist cool tea bags onto the eye area. The tannins in the tea help reduce the swelling by reducing inflammation while caffeine draws water from the skin helping deflate puffiness.

You can also calm undereye circles using cucumber slices, which contain enzymes to reduce tissue inflammation, shrinking bags and erasing shadows.

Dark Circles Treatments...
Antioxidant treatments like vitamin C and vitamin E can also help shrink bags by firming the skin. You may also consider trying topical vitamin K which helps improve the appearance of visible veins.

But if your dark circles are due to deep hollows, slathering vitamins onto the area may not be enough to get rid of the shadows. Deep hollows may ultimately need to be filled in order to eliminate the problem. Fat transplantation can be performed by a plastic surgeon in this case. Fat is removed from the hip, thigh or buttock through a syringe or liposuction cannula from locally anesthetized skin, rinsed and then injected under the skin into the hollow.
