| | 5 / 7 5. Cook more meals at home
The average family is spending more of its food dollars on meals consumed outside the home. "But these foods also tend to be higher in calories, fat, salt, and sugar than foods cooked at home," says W. Allan Walker, professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "And some restaurant entrees contain as many calories as an adult should consume in an entire day." Portion sizes at restaurants have also upsized over the years, so much so that researchers are now looking at portion sizes as a factor in the growing obesity rates among adults and children alike.
Cooking your own meals at home is an easy way to ensure the quality and quantity of foods you and your family eat are what they should be. To make home cooking easier, master a few simple one-pot dishes that you can serve for a few days.
