4. Dried fruit and nuts

They're generally considered a healthy option for between-meal snacks. But be careful in your selections. "You may think that dried fruit is just dehydrated fruit but it can have added ingredients such as added sugars and corn sugars," explains Palinski. Check the ingredients carefully and steer clear of anything that isn't just the fruit itself. Nuts can be an excellent source of heart healthy fats but watch out for those with lots of added sodium, Palinski adds. Your best bets are the raw or unsalted varieties.
