Nursing tips

Hold your baby close to your breast during feeding. Her head, neck, and body should all be in a straight line. Give her mouth a little nudge with your nipple. When her mouth opens wide, bring your baby to your breast -- not the other way round.

You'll know if your baby is latched on well if her bottom lip is curled back and the only visible area of your areola is above her top lip. And listen for the sound of her swallowing, too. If your baby pauses from time to time, don't panic -- it's perfectly normal.

Most babies breastfeed every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours during the first month. You can tell that your baby feeds enough if she nurses every 2 to 3 hours, has 6 to 8 wet diapers per day, and is gaining weight -- around 1 pound each month.

It may seem like your baby wants to nurse all the time, but her increased need to feed actually signals your body to produce even more milk, so there's no need to worry about your milk supply.
