Off-Color Complexions & Fixes

How to improve your skin tone for a perfect, healthy complexion.
Redness
  • Skin Sensitivity: Redness is most common among fair individuals with sensitive skin. Skin turns red from mild inflammation when it comes into contact with harsh products and irritating chemicals, and may produce a tingling or burning sensation.

  • Fix: To diminish the red tone, use only mild fragrance-free hypoallergenic skincare products to keep sensitive skin from getting irritated. Look out for soothing anti-reddening ingredients or botanical extracts like hydrocortisone, aloe vera, chamomile or lavender. Also, exfoliate with an extra-gentle scrub once every week.

  • Rosacea: This skin condition is characterized by a red flush across the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin, and is accompanied by acne-like papules, or bumps, which may be swollen and hard. However, unlike acne, these papules do not produce blackheads, whiteheads or cysts. Rosacea is a genetic condition but it can be controlled.

  • Fix: Avoid stimulants which increase blood flow and cause blood vessels to expand, e.g. spicy food, alcohol and caffeine. Such triggers can aggravate ruddiness of the face and cause flare-ups. To bring rosacea under control, it is best to see a dermatologist for a personalized skincare regime.
