Skin Toners, Tonics and Astringents

Your beauty guide to skin toners.

Toners for Your Skin Type

Toners, tonics and astringents are often taken to mean the same thing. But there're some subtle differences: skin tonics are usually milder on the skin than astringents (which are typically alcohol-based). It's important to choose toners that are targeted for your skin type and needs.
  • Tonics and toners contain little or no alcohol. Skin tonics have a much milder effect than astringents.
  • For normal skin, look for rosewater tonics or cucumber toners.
  • Dry skin type can benefit from hydrating toners that contain oils like castor oil, rose oil and evening primrose oil. Steer clear from alcohol-based astringents which can over-dry your skin.
  • For sensitive skin, using mild toners with soothing ingredients like aloe and rosewater can help calm and moisturize the skin. Avoid any toners that contain alcohol or alpha-hydroxy acids (like lactic or glycolic acid) as they are too drying and can cause irritation.
  • If you have oily skin, choose toners that contain witch hazel to remove greasy buildup, tea tree to help blemished skin and chamomile to soothe the skin.

  • Astringents are usually alcohol-based.
  • Only use astringents when you have very oily skin, or during times when your skin tends to be excessively oily, such as the week prior to menstruation.
  • Oily skin type should stay away from any toners containing oils.
