Stretch Marks

How stretch marks occur and ways to prevent and treat them.
Who Gets Stretch Marks?
There are some factors which determine how prone one is to stretch marks:

1. Family History.
Family history appears to play a part in whether you get stretch marks during pregnancy. If your mother has got stretch marks, chances are you'll have them too.

2. Gender.
Stretch marks are more common in women than in men.

3. Ethnicity.
Women with darker skin are less likely to develop stretch marks.

4. Weight Gain & Weight Loss.
Stretch marks can show up anytime when a significant amount of weight is gained and/or lost in a short period of time. Between 50-90% of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy, as a result of weight gain and stretching of the abdomen. Adolescents undergoing puberty may experience rapid growth which can lead to stretch marks, as can repeated weight gain and/or loss (yo-yo dieting).

5. Steroids.
Stretch marks also may develop if a person uses skin creams or ointments that contain steroid (such as hydrocortisone) for more than a few weeks, or has taken high doses of oral corticosteroids for months.
